Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem complicated initially, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 offers an amazing range of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with many shooting for the low.
