Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo starts exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in almost all poker games.

A low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.

It may seem complicated at first, following a few hands you will be able to get the basic nuances of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of betting choices and because you have several individuals shooting for the high, and many shooting for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
