Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha Hi-Lo begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting happens and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get confused. Unlike Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game easily enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous individuals battling for the high hand, and several shooting for the low.
