Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved taking part in various card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a bit and headed to New York to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played countless hours and don’t win a majority of the time. He made some additional money by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could better his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.

The definite improvement in his skills happened when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest players would frequently play against each other. Howard was able to access some of the foremost players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his cunning thinking skills. He used these strategic concepts in the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about the right way to make the correct choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the best female players the poker arena today. He headed to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he decided to play more tournaments.
