Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved gambling on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting really competitive in the above-mentioned card games while playing his dad. After graduating from secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and relocated to New York City to compete in some big-time chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were rough as he played extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by being an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He judged he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He made an attempt to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.

The actual improvement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best gamblers would regularly challenge each other. Howard was able to access some of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, he would hone his cunning thinking skills. Howard applied these strategy ideas to the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie Duke is one of the best women players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer relocated to Vegas in 1993 and participated in money games for the following decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
